Board Developer Program FAQs
FAQs
Program Overview
When is the Developer Program launching?
We’ll begin gradually rolling out access to the Board SDK in December 2025, with full public release expected in January 2026.
How do I participate in the Developer Program?
We’re excited for you to build on Board! It’s an open program. Please submit your interest at board.fun/developers.
Is there a developer portal or community?
All resources will be available on our website at board.fun/developers, and a developer forum will launch in early 2026.
Pieces
How many pieces can be supported at one time?
Board's piece detection is trained on each individual game's set of pieces (e.g.: the Mushka piece set, the Strata piece set).
You can begin developing with existing piece sets and more piece sets will continue to be released.
How do pieces work?
Board pieces use conductive “glyph” patterns that create unique responses on the touchscreen. They have no sensors, batteries, or other electronic components in the pieces.
What’s included in the SDK?
The Board Unity SDK provides everything needed to build games for the Board platform, including:
- Input detection and tracking for game pieces and finger touches
- Session management for multiplayer gameplay
- Save game functionality
- Board Simulator for testing piece interactions in the Unity Editor without physical hardware
What languages or frameworks are supported?
The Board SDK currently supports Unity with C#, with a minimum version of Unity 2021.3.56f2 (Unity 6 is also supported). Support for Unreal Engine and Godot is expected for 2026.
Development Process
Do I need to purchase a dev kit to develop?
No, you can start with just the SDK and Board Simulator in Unity to develop and test gameplay. When ready for testing on real hardware, any retail Board device will work—there are no separate developer kits.
How does Board handle noise such as arms, hands, etc?
Board’s AI is trained to filter out unintentional contact such as hands or arms resting on the display. The system distinguishes between intentional finger touches and incidental contact, ensuring a smooth and intuitive gaming experience.
Is there a cost for the SDK?
No, the SDK documentation and libraries are free.
Game Store
How will the Game Store work?
Our store will follow a traditional game store model, with more details to come in 2026.
Can I publish my game publicly?
New games and features will roll out regularly starting in early 2026 from Board and partner game development studios, with a growing ecosystem of independent creators joining through the Board Developer Program.
Do you have a system to create/sell custom pieces for new games?
You can begin developing with existing piece sets and more piece sets will continue to be released. Selected games, in partnership with Board, will be eligible for creation of custom piece sets.
